This systematic review aims to analyze the trends of citizen participation in the last 5 years, to understand how people are involved in the decision-making and political life of their communities. A systematic review methodology was used, selecting studies published in the aforementioned period from Scopus (5), Scielo (12), Redalyc (6) and Dialnet (12). The results underline the importance of promoting and strengthening citizen participation in different areas of society and in public decision-making. It is concluded that in the region there is a growing interest in this issue, especially in Ecuador and Peru, where civil society is acquiring a more relevant role in democratic development. On the other hand, it was identified that Venezuela and Cuba face challenges to encourage citizen participation due to governmental restrictions and limitations on freedom of expression. In conclusion, this systematic review highlights the importance of continuing to promote citizen participation as a fundamental pillar for democratic strengthening, while noting the need to overcome obstacles in some countries of the region to achieve greater involvement of citizens in political decision-making.
