The review article had the objective to analyze and identify the best available scientific evidence on the influence of COVID-19 on the impact on the rights of persons deprived of liberty. Various databases and websites were searched to find scientific articles on COVID-19, human rights and persons deprived of liberty from the last five years. A methodology of review of scientific production was applied and articles published before 2018 and those that were not available for free download were excluded. Overcrowding in prisons was found to be a risk factor for the spread of COVID-19 affecting inmates. States need to implement urgent public policies to protect the rights of this vulnerable population. Problems in prisons related to overcrowding, lack of investment in infrastructure and services, and psychological assistance during the pandemic are identified.
