EThis article examines the evolution of maternal mortality in the San Martín Region during the period from 2019 to 2023. It is based on data from the Epidemiological Surveillance System of Maternal Mortality of the Ministry of Health, with a total of 76 cases analyzed up to the week 18 of 2023, in a total population of 940,143 inhabitants. An increase in cases has been observed since 2020, with obstetric hemorrhages and hypertensive disorders being the main direct causes, with 24.7% and 18.5%, respectively. Prenatal care was affected in 2020 and 2021 due to the closure of reproductive health services due to the Covid-19 pandemic, contributing to the increase in the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and accentuating social and economic inequalities. The conclusion highlights the need to improve intervention strategies in the care of women throughout their reproductive life, emphasizing preconception care as a fundamental measure to address the identified challenges.
