This article deals with the evolution and growing importance of improving scientific competencies, focusing on metacognitive theorical models. The objective of the research was to analyze the trends in publications related to metacognitive theoretical models and scientific competencies in students. The methodology included the exhaustive search in the database Scopus using keywords such as “Metacognitive theoretical model” and “Scientific competencies”, covering the period from January 1991 to December 2023. Tools such as Datawrapper, Bibliometrix and VOSviewer were used for the bibliometric analysis. The results revealed an ascending trend in the scientific production, with a notable increase in 2023. The international collaboration, the thematic diversity and the influence of outstanding authors were highlighted aspects. Leading journals, prominent institutions, and significant funding sources were also identified. The quantitative analysis demonstrated a predominancy of article about books, indicating current preferences on the knowledge diffusion. This article not only fill a knowledge gap from a bibliometric perspective but it also gives a solid base to design effective educational strategies and guide future researches in this little explored area.
