For years, the lack of responsibility with environmental care has led to excessive consumption of resources and accumulation of waste, affecting sustainability and the natural environment. The formation of environmental awareness has framed a route towards sustainability, sustainable practices, responsible use of resources and reuse; evidencing the need to address environmental problems, relating human activity to its environment. The objective of this review was to know the effectiveness of the application of programs to promote environmental awareness in primary school students during the last five years. A literature review has been used, by searching for articles from indexed journals, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, EbscoHost, Scielo, Emerald Insight and manual search, using the Boolean search method and the prism methodology, obtaining a total of 30 articles. It is concluded that educational programs to promote environmental awareness in students are effective and have allowed them to improve pro-environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, through practical educational strategies and overcoming obstacles such as the lack of resources and teacher training.
